A-C-T : Feel like your learning’s come to a halt? Flipping that ‘stagnation’ feeling

Awe moment

I was watching the Diary of a CEO Episode with Doctor Gabor Mate, when I thought of something very important on the journey towards a growth mindset.

How can I be so busy and focused on learning something each spare minute I have in the day, yet feel a sense of stagnation? Where does this feeling of making little progress stem from? Am I not really learning anything? Is it all too much for the brain to take in? Even when you take a break, that feeling continues to linger at the back of your mind.

I realised that in reality, you can get so focused on ‘doing’ and ‘learning’, that you fall into this deep learning stage for a period of time. While in that stage, you forget everything you already know because you’re so focused on soaking up all the information that’s new to you instead! Causing this feeling, like we’re not learning at all!

But once you’re aware of this ‘stagnation’ feeling, you realise it’s really just an emotion. The good news is, that we can manage these emotions, it just takes practice.

If you’ve ever experienced this or are feeling it right now, remind yourself of how much you already know. Yes, you’ll never know everything but you certainly know more than you did 3, 6 or 12 months ago! Reflect with some self-love and self-appreciation. You CAN be confident in who you are and what you already know, and be objective at the same time, to continue learning. Because that’s when REAL growth happens.

Take a pen and paper and draw a line down the middle. On the left write down any negative feelings from today and on the right, the positive alternative or how you would like to think instead.
Keeping the positive alternative objective, how can you take this to work in your advantage tomorrow?
