A-C-T : Is the Growth Mindset Enough? Develop It With Emotional Intelligence As the Path To Lifelong Happiness and Success

Here comes the A-C-T Blog! Here I give you an Awe moment from research or own experience, a Citation supporting the topic and a Take away for you to ponder on.

Awe moment

If you haven’t already heard of the ‘Growth Mindset’, it’s a term popularised by psychologist, Dr. Carol Dweck back in 2012. The Growth Mindset is the belief that one’s intelligence and abilities can be developed through effort and consistency vs. the Fixed Mindset, where one believes their intelligence, talent and abilities are just fixed traits. Since then, the theory has been widely adopted in education and business as a way of motivating people to learn and improve, but is it enough?

Over the years, research has shown that although having the Growth Mindset is crucial, it’s not enough to make you successful, yet not having it will prevent you from trying in the first place.

Take Away

Whether it’s to benefit you in your career, parenting, relationships or personal growth and happiness, the Growth Mindset is still truly valuable to grasp. Without realising and believing we can achieve ANYTHING if we put in the time and effort, we limit ourselves to so many possibilities and hinder our own potential.

Mindset and Emotional Intelligence have a very close connection. Without Emotional Intelligence, you may not be as keen to put in the effort, explore new things and take risks to facilitate a Growth Mindset, as you will struggle to manage those negative emotions. On your journey to developing a Growth Mindset, you will realise that it’s so much easier to be open to learning and putting in the effort, when you feel positive emotions and manage the negative ones.

The next time your negative emotions hinder you from doing what you want or need to do to reach your goals, reflect on whether you are thinking in a Growth or Fixed Mindset. To switch yourself back into a Growth Mindset, focus on the solutions not the problems.

Take a challenge you are currently facing, what are three potential solutions to overcome it?
