A-C-T: Embracing the Journey: Lessons from an Ultra Trail Finish Line

Here comes the A-C-T Blog! Here I give you an Awe moment from research or own experience, a Citation supporting the topic and a Take away for you to ponder on.

Awe moment

The month of June marked my proudest moment as a wife, partner and friend to my husband, Diogo, who completed a 67km Ultra Trial!

Over the past two years, I have witnessed his unwavering commitment to running almost daily. Regardless of the weather, mood, workload, sickness, or mental battles, he has consistently risen at 5/6 am to run 5-10km, starting his day like a true champion.
Before this, he had never run or hiked more than 15km, never attempted an Ultra Trail, and never pushed his mind and body to such extremes. Yet, he went for it.

I’ve often asked him what keeps him motivated to run. His responses, like “Once you start, just keep going” and “Discipline is key,” never fully resonated with me until I stood by the finish line, waiting for him to appear over the hill. Watching other contestants cross the line after 65km (or 110km for some), I saw faceless bodies, completely in their own heads, battling through to the finish line, oblivious to the pain in their knees, backs, or feet. I saw completely numb faces, when it hit me…

Take Away

Achieving any goal, isn’t just about the physical training, preparation, consistency, and discipline. It’s equally about cultivating the right mindset.
Witnessing Diogo and the other runners, I realised that true commitment requires pushing through barriers, embracing discomfort, and maintaining focus despite the challenges. It’s learning to love the journey, along with the bumps in the road.

As you set your goals, remember that success lies not only in the physical journey but also in the mental courage to persevere.

Reflect on your own aspirations and consider:

What mindset will you adopt to push through your own finish line?
The next step you take could very well be the beginning of your own incredible journey.
