A-C-T: The Hidden Truths of Emotional Intelligence: Are You Managing or Suppressing?

Here comes the A-C-T Blog! Here I give you an Awe moment from research or own experience, a Citation supporting the topic and a Take away for you to ponder on.

Awe moment

Have you ever stopped to think about how many emotions you experience in a single day? More importantly, how often do you manage them or let them drive your actions?
We often think managing emotions means suppressing the negative ones and amplifying the positive, but what if that approach is holding us back from truly understanding ourselves? The more you develop emotional intelligence, the better you become at distinguishing which emotions deserve your attention.

It’s not about controlling every feeling—it’s about managing the ones that matter in the moment, whether positive or negative. Being open to this kind of self-awareness not only enhances your emotional intelligence but also strengthens your growth mindset. By recognising the power of managing your emotions, you’re actively committing to personal growth, better relationships, and long-term success.

“Between stimulus and response, there is a space.
In that space lies our freedom and power to choose our response.
In our response lies our growth and freedom.”

Viktor E. Frankl

Take away

Have you ever felt an emotion and wondered whether it had any real purpose on your mind management journey? You’re not alone. A common misconception is that we need to “box” or ignore certain emotions—especially the uncomfortable ones. But the reality is, not all emotions are meant to be suppressed. Some of them, even the negative ones, are there to offer valuable insights. Rather than silencing them, it’s essential to evaluate each emotion’s relevance to the situation. The real art of mind management isn’t blocking emotions, but deciding which ones should guide us.

Many mind management techniques teach us to stop emotions from overshadowing logical thinking by pushing them aside. And while this method often works, there are times when our emotions carry wisdom. The trick is knowing when to listen. Next time you’re overwhelmed, flip the script. Ask yourself, “Is this emotion telling me something valuable?” or “How can I use this feeling to navigate the situation more effectively?” Trusting and balancing your emotional insights can be as important as logical thinking.

How often do you use your emotions to inform your decisions, and how might that change if you learned to balance them with logic?
